Cathy Buerger, Ph.D.

Anthropologist exploring how communication shapes trust, conflict, and the communities we build.

About me

I study how trust forms or fractures, how ideas take hold, and how communication can pull communities together or push them apart. Trained as an anthropologist, I study these dynamics with a qualitative, human-centered lens, focusing on how meaning is made in everyday interactions and high-stakes public conversations alike. My work connects deep research to real-world application: I partner with scholars, civil society organizations, policymakers, and technology platforms to design and evaluate strategies that reduce harm, strengthen social cohesion, and foster more constructive public discourse. I’m drawn to complexity, to questions without easy answers, and to the creative, interdisciplinary thinking required to navigate them.
